We're heading out West!

It's true! After years of SAYING we were going to take a trip to the golden coast, I've finally gone and bought us plane tickets! My dream was to take two weeks and drive all the way down the coast but all we can do this time is six days. Oh well.
We're flying into San Diego and are going to spend most of the time there and near Los Angeles visiting some old friends, and hopefully meeting up with Mr. Tiny! So we need some suggestions of what to do!
I was pretty sure I didn't want to go to Disneyland, but Travis wants to, and pretty much every single person I've talked to says we need to, so that is happening! I'm also hoping to visit Farm Sanctuary and take a class with Richard Simmons at Slimmons! (seriously, is this doesn't happen I will be crying!). I am also hoping there will be a movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery .
So what else do we NEED to do? What isn't to be missed? What is a good beach to check out? Are we crazy to no be in northern California instead? I can't wait for this trip! I've been to the LA area once a few years ago for a wedding, but Travis has never been to the West Coast at all! Yay!

  1. Are you planning to go to the Chinese theater for the handprints? I would love to do that!
I love how you used vintage photos in your post! It makes me think... What would someone from the 50s do in Cali?

  4. Can't wait to see you guys!!! Let me know your schedule when it gets closer and we'll definitely work something out!!! Crazy would be NOT coming to Southern California (like I was crazy not to go to Nashville on this trip)! I'm sitting in the Charleston airport waiting to board the plane as I type. I never thought about it before but prepare Travis for the brownness of the landscape - not a kudzu in sight!

  5. Oh yay, San Diego! I lived there for years and now I just miss it so much! My mister is from CA/AZ. In San Diego definitely see Balboa Park, Ocean Beach, La Jolla caves & seals... In LA yeah definitely go to Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and the La Brea tar pits are cool. There's just way too much to do in So-Cal to even make a good list! We try to go back and visit every year or so, but I don't know if we're going to make it this year because we're trying to buy a house. So have some fun for us!!!! :)

  6. Rose Bowl Flea market - if you are there that weekend.
Santa Monica Pier, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Island.
I have been to Disneyland a ton when I was younger. (I went to high school in Irvine, so this is my old stomping grounds). As an adult we took our kids and I found the behind the scenes guidebooks/tips a godsend. Also some blogs about tips..do some googling. Fast pass a must, where to eat, what lines get long, best hours...good to go a little research to get the most of it. YOU MUST go to Disneyland tho..it is so fun!
You and Travis will have an awesome trip!

  7. I definitely think if you go to the Orange County/long beach area- I HIGHLY recommend going to Disney/CA Adventure. You can actually buy day passes on EBAY from people who have season passes and sell them by the day. It sounds shady as hell, and probably is but it worked flawlessly and saved us over 60%. Also there is a restaurant in Long Beach called The Potholder that has tons of menu items (probably lots of vegan stuff but you can double check). It's really cute and world renowned and I am still dreaming of my breakfast I had there. If you are feeling beachy, Huntington Beach is awesome. I guess you should probably go to Hollywood, even though YOU WILL BE DISAPOINTED. It's really dirty and seedy and not so glam. Oh and if you go to San Diego, I HIGHLY recommend going to the Wild Animal Park in Encinitas (outside of SD). It is a sister park to the San Diego zoo but less crowded and the animals roam much freer. It is also less expensive. I think my ticket was $30 and it was WELL worth the price.

  10. Tide pooling is so much fun. Nothing like sticking your finger in a sea anemone! We did it in La Jolla, but any where in that area is fun.

  14. Yay San Diego! Definitely go to Balboa Park--the Zoo is the best in the world, hands down. Eat as many burritos as possible, and definitely try a vegan California burrito (I made up that name. A real California burrito is carne asada and fries. my version is beans, guac, and fries). Hang out in Ocean Beach--there are a lot of cute antique shops on Newport Ave. Ummm... There's a kind of fun boardwalk (with a roller coaster) at Mission Beach. Seriously, there are a million things to do that I love in San Diego.
