We went and saw the greatest movie yesterday and I had to tell you guys about it! I hadn't heard of it at all until we saw a poster hanging up at our local indie theater. But I could tell that it would be right up my alley even without seeing the trailer. It finally starting playing last week and I got my chance to check it out, and I absolutely loved it!
It is the story of a group of Aboriginal girls in Australia in 1968. They audition to sing for the soldiers in Vietnam and the movie is full of sequined gowns and Motown music and amazing clothes and hair! Here is the trailer if you are interested:
The movie has great reviews (even a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes!) The criticism is that it is nothing new, if you've seen a movie about a band in the 60's you kind of know what to expect. But that doesn't stop it from being a great movie with amazing music and a lot of heart! And Chris O'Dowd is adorable and I LOVE that Gail, played by Deborah Mailman is a plus sized woman of color who finds love and success without her weight being mentioned once!
If you are in Nashville it looks like it is playing at the Belcourt at least through the rest of the week. And if you don't live here, maybe it will be playing near you soon! I highly recommend going to check it out!
I simply love the sapphires! I own both the movie and the soundtrack haha (how wonderful is the music!). It was released everywhere here in Australia so it's pretty funny that no one's heard of it in America :-P and how great is Chris O'Dowd (The Boat that Rocked is another of my favourites thanks to him and its great soundtrack!)
Yeh it's cool alright! Deb Mailman is is loads of things downunder (mainly TV) and she is a fantastic actress. She can sing too obvs! (My kids have a Play Skool DvD with her on it lol! x
I got a chance to see this at a local film festival a few months ago! It was AMAZING! Totally agree!! I can't believe it hasn't gotten more hype! Also, Chris O'Dowd is my favorite.
I have a secret place in my heart for indie movies from Australia (think Strictly Ballroom, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Muriel's Wedding, etc), so this is bringing together both that and the fabulousness of Motown girl groups? SIGN. ME. UP! Glad to hear about the good reviews, I hope I can catch it out at the Belcourt!!
I've been meaning to see this one for a long time. It has been playing in SoCal for a while but I think I might have waited too long (I think it is out of theaters by us now). I love going to the movies but I rarely go... Glad to know that it is good! I love Australian EVERYTHING!!!
Sounds like a great film! I'm surprised I haven't heard of it. I will have to give it a try sometime.
