Studio Ghibli in Nashville!

I am so excited that the little local theater, the Belcourt, is having a Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli series right now! Some of my favorite movies are included, and I'm trying to see as many as I can on the big screen. Sadly I'm going to be out of town for 4 of the days, but I'm still going to get to see a lot! Nashville friends, click the top photo and you can see the schedule! They are showing the dubbed versions during the day, and the subtitled at night.
Last night Travis and I went to see My Neighbor Totoro. It was my first time seeing it in the original Japanese (and my 100th time seeing it overall, haha) and I think I liked it even more! The dubs are good, but there was just something about the original sound. Totoro is so incredibly cute funny! The theater was packed. I think it was the most nerds per square feet I have even been around, and that includes the Pez convention!
I'm bummed that I won't get to see Howl's Moving Castle on the big screen. It is playing while I'm gone. The artwork is so stunning in that one, and the story is really amazing. Which is true of all of these movies. If you are in town, that is a great one to see!
On Saturday we're going to make a day of it and see Whispers of the Heart and The Cat Returns. I haven't seen either before, so that will be fun! My friend Kevin recommended them. I really wish I could have bought one of the passes to see every movie they are playing! But I have to go to work.
On Saturday we are also going to see Pom Poko! It looks so cute! It is about Tanuki (Raccoon dogs!). I have a statue of one by my backdoor. I love them so much! I hope this one turns out to be as cute as it looks.
When I get back from the airport on Friday we're going to see Spirited Away. It is one my favorite movies of ALL TIME! If you haven't seen it before, come out on Friday night, or if you aren't in Nashville you need to rent it! The first time I watched it, I watched it twice in a row, I loved it so much.  The story was so magical and different from anything else I'd ever seen! We're seeing that one in the original Japanese too.
If I have time I'll try to fit in a few more, maybe Castle in the Sky or Princess Mononoke. Any other Miyazaki fans out there?

  1. How funny! I am a huge HP fan and loved your description of Hogsmead in your previous post (hubby and I are waiting for the baby to grow up enough so we can make a trip down!!)... nice to see that you love Totoro too! Total cuteness. My nieces have huge Tototo stuffies and swag. I'm jealous. I love me some soot gremlins.

  3. Yes we love all of them!! Even pom poko with the weird raccoon testicle parts haha!
We own them all and just bought The Secret World Of Arrietty, when it came out (last week I think)
My favorites are a tie---Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. I also highly recommend the book Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones (there is 3 in the series and I loved them all!!)
I also recommend Grave of the Fireflies which has Studio Ghibili's animation work. Its beautiful, its sad...I love it (also a novel too) :) :) The only one's Ive been able to see in theaters are Ponyo (also lovely!) and Arriety and of course they were dubbed. Have a great time!!

I will definitely check out the howl's moving castle book! Before I had only seen secret world of arriety and ponyo in the theater. I can't wait for spirited away! I have never heard of grave of the fireflies, they aren't showing that one. hmmm.

  4. YES! My first movie I found in blockbuster on summer (when we would go rent movies and video games like twice a week) One day I found Princess Mononoke, and I watched it like 4 times. Then when I returned it I asked if I could just rent it again. I ended up renting that movie so many times that my Mom would ask me if I was even looking at any of the other movies. She still calls me 'Princess Mononoke' to this day. That movie is just magic to me! Obviously a few years later I finally bought it. When I was younger it was really hard to find/buy Studio Ghibli movies. I've seen almost all of their movies and own most of them too. (except for Pom Poko)
Have you ever heard of Tales from Earthsea? It's also a ghibli movie, made by Miyazaki's son...who also became an animator/director. The style is very similar to his fathers.
Anyways sorry I'm rambling... but I have so much to say!

  6. <3 this post! I spent some time studying in Tokyo a few years back and visited the Studio Ghibli museum. Suffice it say, I never wanted to leave. And the gift shop, my God, the gift shop!! The whole thing was amazing.

I even had neck surgery once and was both sore and heavily sedated...and all I wanted to do was watch My Neighbor Totoro on repeat, because any time I watch it...I become....elated.

I'm so glad you get to experience this!
