If you get to know me at all, you will notice that I'm a very nostalgic person. I hate it when special things that belonged to people that I don't even know get thrown away! So I find myself holding on to lots of things that I don't really need, or care about all that much. I have been toting around a BIG box of notes and cards from house to house for years! So I made myself sit down the other day and go through every single one, and only keep the really special stuff, like letters from my great grandmother or funny notes from my dad ("fwesh fwuit in fwidge" might be my favorite). I had pretty much every note that had ever been given to me. I've been out of high school almost ten years, and I found myself not even knowing who half of the people were!
Apparently I helped Tiffany in math, but I can't remember anything about her. Why do I hold on to this stuff? All these notes passed in class were pretty good for a laugh. There were so many weird inside jokes, and so much stupid. drama. Oh high school.
Embarrassing confession time. I was REALLY into the Backstreet Boys in middle school. As in, my friends and I wrote letters to each other as if we were married to our favorite. So I was Mrs. Littrell. Haha. I actually still have my HUGE box of Backstreet Boys stuff because I haven't been able to throw it all away. At the end of this letter, my friend wanted me to tell Brian hi, from Nick. Because she was Mrs. Carter of course. (Nick Carter shops in the store I work at sometimes and it is always pretty thrilling, though I try to pretend it isn't. Haha!)
Here is a picture of me celebrating my favorite Backstreet Boy's birthday when I was 13! See my awesome shirt? The cake was blue because that was his favorite color. And I think we had his favorite drink (ginger ale)and favorite food (mac and cheese). I've always been really cool.
I loved all the intricate folds we did on notes. I kept a lot of the notes from my currant best friend, because they were hilarious, but I'm really proud to say I threw the rest away. And I only kept birthday cards and things with good notes in them. Just enough to fill a tiny vintage suitcase.
Phyllis and Priscilla kept me company of course. Look at all the pigmentation on her little eyeball!
So Funny! I did the exact same thing a couple years ago! I sat on my bedroom floor and read every single note! It was so funny. Because I'm a bit older than you, I had all my NKOTB stuff! Can you believe that I went to FIVE concerts??? HaHa! I thought I would be in love with Joe forever. Funny how you get over things with age! But wasn't it so fun to have a "crush" like that?
ReplyDeleteErica :)
haha, that is awesome! i only ever got to see the backstreet boys once but i BAWLED through the first two songs! i really believed that i would be married to Brian.
DeleteOHHHH!!! you've inspired me to dig out my ol' high school box! I can't wait to re-live it all:-)
ReplyDeleteGood!
DeleteDUDE!!!! You + backstreet boy shirt = Awesome
ReplyDeletehahah, i still have that shirt, but it is pretty threadbare! i should bust it out again.
DeleteI used to keep everything too! I literally had boxes full of notes and things until I had to move houses! Love the 13 year old photo hahahaha (mac and cheese is my favourite food forever) x
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the same thing as Erica...I went through a boy band phase with the New Kids on the Block. Later in high school, I got really into another boy band...Duran Duran! Have to say, the latter is way cooler then any of them put together...even if they were already pretty old at that point.
ReplyDeleteI'm not embarrassed to admit I still quite enjoy the Backstreet Boys! Although my tastes have expanded like crazy since my teen years, I still the harmonies of the Boys and consider Never Gone their BEST album and some of their leaked unreleased work their best. The NKOTBSB concert was phenomenal and I can't wait for Backstreet's new album now that Kevin is back!
ReplyDeletenever gone is the only one i don't have. i should get it, because i listen to millinium occasionally and still love it.
DeleteI have similar boxes from middle school, high school, and even my early 20s. I am horribly sentimental. Kudos for weeding out the stuff that wasn't super important to you.
ReplyDeleteI love the photos of your pugs. I keep telling my husband we need to get 2 rescue pugs like "that rad blogger lady" (that would be you), but he ignores me. I am completely serious, but I guess our insane kitty cats will have to do :)
Adrienne
What Lola Wants
haha, you NEED pugs! old lady pugs are the BEST. i will never go back to our pugless existance.
DeleteBSB were/are awesome. No shame!
ReplyDeleteMust have been hard throwing some of those letter out. I know I used to have a box of them too but after moving like 10+ times in my life, I've lost/thrown out most of them.
I think I haven't moved enough. Just 4 times in my life, so I have a MASS of stuff.
DeleteI definitely sent a few letters to a Mrs. Littrell :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm bummed I missed Brian's birthday party that year!
hahah, yes! there was definitely a pile of Yuliya letters in there!
DeleteThis is awesome! My husband is the same! We have boxes of his old love letters and yearbooks and all sorts of stuff. He goes through it every once in awhile. I have no such attachment to anything, really. When we moved to California 6 years ago, I threw most of my stuff away so we could fit stuff in our tiny trailer we rented and he put so much stuff in tetris style that it was too heavy for us to pull and his dad had to end up bringing it out with his big truck! I had the hardest time telling him that he didn't need 15 years of skateboard magaizes. :)
ReplyDeletei think i need to be forced to move like that! i have SO MANY MAGAZINES. that I never look at,but can't throw away!
DeleteMaybe you'll inspire me; Lord, do I need to go through some of my memorabilia. ((Additionally, I love any and all photos of your pugs, the end.))
ReplyDeleteDon't feel so bad. Not only did my BFF and I use our favorite New Kid on the Block's last name, but I made my own wedding invitation to mine and Joey McIntyre's wedding. Good thing I married a man named Joey. I just had to cross out the last name.
ReplyDeletehahaha! i love that you made wedding invitations. incredible.
Deleteha! we're so much alike. i keep everything too (and have lots of strangers photographs) and have a big bag of notes from grade school in the attic. i was also crazy about a band like that, although mine was green day. my cousin and i would write silly fanfiction stories, we would celebrate their birthdays and bake them cakes, and one year we boycotted our high school proms and hosted our own "green day" themed one at my house. pretty ridiculous.
ReplyDeletethat is awesome. at least green day is cooler than the backstreet boys. my next obsession was weezer, who i still love even though their last few albums have been less than amazing.
Deletei threw mine away when i went to college and still regret it...thankfully my best friend, who I have known since 7th grade, is a packrat....so she has them all.Btw- I never celebrated a backstreet boy's birthday but I wrote a fan letter to Ryder Strong...and now follow him on twitter.
ReplyDeleteI used to save everything too, I even saved my flowers after they died! The whole top shelf in my closet was full of them, lol. About 15 years ago I did the big purge with the letters and notes, only saving my favorites. And hey, at least you had 4 or 5 boys to chose from, these poor kids today have to fight over only one Justin Bieber.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. That last picture kills me. <3
