A few photos

I showed you the perfect vintage photo of my mom with Santa as a baby on Christmas. While she was looking for that one, I got to see some more photos of her! I just had to share a few. These are actually ones I would have probably picked up if I'd seen them for sale somewhere.
Here she is as a brownie scout, complete with popsicle stick frame! Do you see the mirror surrounded by branches on the ground? I vaguely remembered a brownie ceremony where you had to turn around and look in the mirror so I looked it up. It is the ceremony to induct a new brownie scout! You have to say this:
"Twist me and turn me,
and show me the elf,
I looked in the water
and saw MYSELF!"
How cute is that? I still have my brownie sash. My mom sent my patches to my grandmother in Florida so she could sew them on for me, since my mom didn't know how to sew.
Look at her fancy little hair do! That kills me. And that art behind her. My mom fondly remembers this as her Buffy dress. It was a line of dresses like the ones Buffy wore on Family Affair. My mom says it made her feel very fancy and grown up.
Here is my mom with a roadside chief! She couldn't remember where this was, but I'll just pretend it was Cherokee, North Carolina. I need to find the picture of me around 12 with one of the chiefs.
And another Santa picture. How cute was she? And how weird and fake is that Santa's beard?

  2. It cracks me up thinking about your mom sending everything to Grandma to sew on for you. :) That's some family Girl Scout devotion, right there!

My daughter recently joined the Girl Scouts (as a Daisy Scout) and happily, most patches/badges are iron-on.

  3. Love the brownie photo. I have a similar one of me with a popsicle stick frame...except I added sequins and glitter (big surprise huh?). I was a girl scout until high school and my mom was my leader much of the time. My favorite Halloween costume to wear is my old uniform (fits, but tight in the bust) with my sash with all my badges. Sometimes I will wear my mom's old leader uniform (pantsuit in green) and add my sash...great Halloween costume. The hairdo in the buffy dress is a classic!

  4. I was a brownie, too! You know it never clicked that it was a brownie as in fairy creature till you just posted the rhyme. Always thought it was a baked brownie, ha ha! I just know that all that stuff(brownies, girl scouts, camp, even road trips) were just way more exciting and magical for the older generation. It was just a better time, there's nothin new nowadays but stupid endless phone upgrades that I just don't gel with. Thanks for posting this stuff. I love your nostalgic flair, Rae :)

  6. Your mom's hair and Buffy dress! OMG. I would still like to appear exactly like that, hair, dress, tights, everything, only taller, at whatever my next social event is. That's so much style for a youngster, I can't even believe it! Can you imagine being able to look back at your elementary school photos and NOT be embarrassed? Major snaps to your mom.

  8. I saw a book the other day at Why Louisville called something like Dads were the Original Hipsters. It's a great little picture book of vintage "dad" photos. Your mom was definitely also an original hipster (she is so, so cute and I see the resemblance!)
