Hey guys! Travis and I are going to be in Detroit next month for my cousin's wedding and I need suggestions of cool stuff to do! We were hoping to both get the whole week off before and spend most of the time in Chicago but that isn't going to work out. We'll fly in on a Friday night and leave on Monday afternoon. So let me know if you know anything fun to do there! I found some cute things when searching vintage postcards but I'm sure they aren't around anymore, haha!
When I was looking for vintage postcards I came across this picture, and I love it! Detroit in 1947.
I went to Detroit when I was in 3rd grade. All I remember is that it was the first time I had greek food...and we ate it everyday because our car broke down and it was right next to our hotel. I wanna say they have a good zoo though.
ReplyDeleteI have family in the greater Detroit area so we visit frequently and are always digging up stuff to do. We love abandoned places, and there is a freakin abandoned zoo on Belle Isle! It's so creepy and cool... If you like tiki check out Chin's Chop Suey in Lavonia (not sure if they have anything you could eat, but the decor is well worth the trip.) The son of the owner of the famous Detroit Chin's owns it and it's amazing. Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum is a MUST. Also, there is a thrift/antique shop called Mantra in downtown Detroit that has awesome mid century stuff. There's lots more but a weekend will fly by! Have fun!!!
ReplyDeleteperfect!! thank you so much!
DeleteThe Motown Museum!!!! If you like Motown AT ALL, it's fascinating. Our tourguide was a 17 year old girl and she was incredible. It's a really simple museum, but we LOVED it. I blogged about it here - http://owlreally.blogspot.com/2012/06/visiting-motown-museum.html
ReplyDeleteThere are also so many artist communities popping up in Detroit, but I don't know anything about them. I really wanted to check them out but we didn't have time. I love Michigan though!!
yes!!! i know i commented there saying I would remember it for my trip, but i totally forgot!
Deletehaha! just saw that you commented on that post about going to detroit! :)
ReplyDeleteI would visit Detroit just to see the Heidelberg Project. It seems like the coolest thing! Do a quick Google and check it out!
ReplyDeleteYou have to go to the Henry Ford!!! It's my favorite museum ever, it's seriously so so so so so neat. Depending on what time of the month it is Greenfield Village is super cool too and it's next to the Henry Ford. It opens on the 15th of April I believe.
ReplyDeleteooh that is perfect! we will be there through the 16th!
DeleteI fear Detroit is not as beautiful as those lovely postcards. lol I wish I had some suggestions! I avoid Detroit. My husband almost got me there with the promise of the Miguel Atwood Ferguson Orchestra. lol I hope you find some kick ass stuff to do!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to Michigan in years and years (and years) but just chiming in to say I found your blog, through your instagram, from alphabetpizza and I've been reading for a little bit now :) just wanted to say hi! :) I live in Nashville too, that's what originally caught my attention, but I love all your vintage finds!!
ReplyDeletethank you!
DeleteHi there, you should contact my friend Emily who lives/grew up just outside of Detroit and is well connected in the vintage scene there. You can find her blog here: http://livinvintage.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI'm so disappointed you can't make it to Chicago! I was excited about showing you around my city. Good news though, I'll be coming down to Nashville in a couple of weeks! I just sent you an e-mail about it, YAY.
I hope you guys have a great time! And I love the picture of the nun in front of the "Worlds Hottest Strippers" sign! What the heck was she doing there?
ReplyDeleteGo eat amazing greek food at Pegasus and then wander around a bit. They have an amazing flaming cheese and lots of great veggie dishes. Belle Isle, I will definitely second, and if you take the People Mover, you will get to see lots of the sights for only a few dollars.
