Collection 7: Vintage Planters

I really love vintage plants. I always have a big plan for what I'm going to plant in them, but I have a black thumb. I haven't been able to keep anything alive yet. Four of these planters were given to me by Travis when we were dating. He always knew the way to my heart.
This Napcoware fox from Japan is my favorite. I bought him at an antique mall in Murfreesboro around 2006. He would look so pretty with a little maiden hair fern.
I've featured this kitty before. I need to get a little cactus for his tail!
I found a bull and a horse that matched this donkeyat a thrift recently, but they had been broken and glued back together badly. This guy is going in my western room after I put a cactus in his saddle.
The duck and pink elephant live on my vintage radio in the dining room, and the boot with the squirrel on the toe lives in my craft room. The unicorn lives on a bookshelf. Since I took this picture I have accumulated a few more, including some pretty lady head vases. I will try to resist getting anymore until I actually start using them. Anyone have any good resources to teach you about how to keep succulent alive? I had some before, but I think I was overzealous with my watering.

  1. Super cute!! Oh lordy, can I relate! I have soooo many planters. So many that a lot of them are destined for a yard sale in the Spring as I've decided that even though they are the cutest thing ever, I am horrible with plants AND there are just so many pen holders that one person can use. I'll make sure to send you an invite! <---enabling

  2. That little cat with the arched back is darling! Planters are one of those things I have a hard time passing up, fortunately I inherited my Grammaw's green arms & can grow anything (college for ornamental horticulture helped as well). Make sure you buy a good cactus mix soil & water sparingly ... like two or three times a month is sufficient in fall, winter & spring. Once a week in summer. If there's no drainage hole in the bottom, put in an inch or two of gravel (depending on the planter's size) beneath the soil for extra drainage.

  4. Hi, I'm new to your blog! I love vintage planters too and I totally think you should check out air plants for some of the smaller ones...they would look really cool! I bought some for my brother from a seller on Etsy and she sends really detailed instructions on how to keep them alive. If you need me to look her up (I can't remember her name right now) just comment on my blog and I'll find the info for you!

I bought the collection of 5 for $20.00.
One of them bloomed while I had it and it gave off a pretty purple flower. I really have to get some of these for myself!

Oh, and to reply to your comment, it really seems like we like the same foods, so if we were to meet up, we'd have the best food adventures! Let me know if you ever come to Portland!

  9. All are so cute (I have a yellow cat like that one). I especially love that fox. I have been collecting animal planters for years and it took me a long time to get the hang of keeping something alive in them! :) Poppy says it well on the care (underwatering is much better than overwatering!!)

  10. I have a green pottery cat planter just like yours and instead of a cactus put a cattail in the back part.

Some old planters make good toothbrush holders.

  11. Hi, I bought my first planter this weekend, it is the kitty, but she is yellow. There is an original price stamped on her feet at .10$. Would you have any idea how old this piece may be or where they are made? I hope to extend the collection to look as great as yours!

  12. I've been googling that fox planter but can't find one for sale. I have a collection too. It started with one I got from this lady's old hoard of cool stuff when I helped her clean. Others I found at thrift shops or Antique stores. I'm addicted! I also have a couple of wall pockets. I mostly like cat ones and other animals but I also found a pipe planter, and a couple for the man cave. Hehe!
