On the Road...

After we left Savannah we headed down the coast. We pulled off the highway hoping that this antique shop would be open. Apparently the owner is only there sporadically. Sadly it was closed. But it was only a few minutes off the interstate so it is always worth a look. Even if you can just pose by the sign!
We peeked in the windows and it looked awesome. Ugh, maybe next time.

Had to take a picture of our drinks. It really shows our personalities. Travis is all function and utility, I'm a sucker for sugar and cute packaging.

Finished the library cat audiobook, and plugged this in. I hate that cover (mostly Woundwart's stupid huge face), but Watership Down just might be my favorite book ever. I have read it over 20 times! And it never gets old. 

We stopped for lunch at a restaurant owned by Bill Murray and his brothers. It is at the golf course where they filmed Caddy Shack.

There were pictures of Bill Murray everywhere. Pretty cute.

Another fried fish lunch. It was really good! The water was so awful though! So much fluoride! Travis was freaking out about it and we stopped at a grocery store immediately after we left so he could get some gallons of distilled water.

Our next stop was St. Augustine. We drove over the lion bridge.

They have little trains that go all over town and take people on tours! I wish we would have had time to go on one. It looked really fun. And look at the spanish moss! (still obsessed)

We drove by the Fountain of Youth to get a picture. Travis is such a good sport driving all over town because I think there is a gator farm with a gator mouth entrance (there wasn't, dang!). After this we headed to Sandford and went out to dinner with my grandparents. Wait until I show you pictures of my grandma's kitchen! It is basically unchanged since the 70's when they bought the house! It is INCREDIBLE!

My first time in Savannah

We decided to stop in Savannah, Georgia kind of last minute. I was looking at possible routes and it turned out it would only add about 30 minutes to the drive is we stayed in Savannah instead of Valdosta, and the former seemed much more exciting. We were only there for about 2 hours (not including sleeping of course) and here is what we did:

I was completely enamored by the spanish moss. You would have thought I had never seen it before.
We went to this bakery on the recommendation of a friend. It didn't disappoint.
The inside was so cute! I felt a little shy taking pictures. Look at this cute display!
They had lots of cute little decorating stuff. I got some vintage/vintage inspired things.
I had a berry pastry. Travis had a biscone (mix between a biscuit and a scone) and it was REALLY good! perfectly sweet and buttery.

We weren't really sure what to do (I hadn't really researched the town at all) so we just headed down to the water front.

There are LOTS of pretty historic buildings in the city.

I loved the bridges to front doors. Travis went on and one about how he would love to be here for the zombie apocalypse. That is his favorite topic of conversation. I just thought they were cute. Can you imagine stringing some pretty buntings along the bridge? 

We talked about how our lives could have turned out so different if I had gone to the Savannah College of Art and Design. I got in and got a scholarship (not a great one) but decided against it. Travis says he would have followed me down here (of course he would have!) and who knows. Fun to think about. We left after just a few hours. I would definitely like to come back, and plan some things to do and research the area. But it was fun for a quick morning stop before getting back on the road. 

Road Trip!! Road Food!!

Are you ready for a million posts about our road trip to Florida? We had a really great time. I actually forgot it was winter! I keep trying to leave the house without my coat and being surprised when I see snow falling from the sky! So here is day one!We spent the whole day driving. But we used one of my favorite resources, Road Food, to find fun places to stop and each. First was the Varsity in Atlanta, Ga. It was so cute! Here is the drive in part: 

There are probably 12 registers open and you just walk up and they say "whata ya have? whataya have? whataya have??" 

Travis ordered for me while I tried to get a picture of this awesome mural without a glare. I never succeeded. Lookit all those cute dogs! I love it. 

Yummmmmm. We got grilled cheese, which was just ok. Their burgers and hot dogs are supposed to be really good. Travis had pimento cheese on his and I tried it for the first time. I will begrudgingly admit that it was good. For some reason they gave us two bags of chips, even though we ordered two sides. So weird. 

Those onion rings! Probably the best I've ever had! They were perfectly crispy.

The fried pies were recommended on the site. I think we got them on a bad day because they were kind of burnt and weird. Not terrible, but not what I was expecting. 

My favorite was their signature drink, the frosty orange. It was like a perfect mix of a sonic slush and a milkshake. I loved it! I want another one now! I actually made Travis stop on the way home so I could get another one. 

On the way out there was this guy doing pencil drawings. Most of them were of places around Atlanta and I was looking at old drive ins and movie theaters when I stumbled across the perfect gift to get my dad for his birthday (which was the next day)

We were actually going to be going to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse in a few days with my dad! He loves that place and we have been a few times as a family. This drawing was the last one before you walked out the door. I feel like it was meant to be! And my dad loved it!

Back on the road, we listened to this book on tape. It was really fun. We were actually laughing out loud and lots of the kitty stories. We are both cat ladies. Of course the end was sad and totally bummed me out. Ugh, why do I never expect that with animal stories!

We got to Savannah and went to this restaurant, another Road Food recommendation. We are pescetarian and had been looking forward to all the great seafood you can get once you get to the coast.

We shared a fried captain's platter and it was really disappointing. The scallops were the best part, and they weren't anything amazing. I didn't even love the flounder, which is my favorite! So sad.
And look at that TAIL! It really grossed me out, and the bones were in there too. Barf!
After dinner we stopped in a Microtel to sleep and I pulled out my books to do some more planning. Oh man I really can't wait to show you the rest of the trip!

Holga Class!

Did I tell you that I am taking a class? It called Holga Camera and Alternate Photo Techniques.  I was crying a river about how I needed something creative to do when a friend from high school posted on Facebook that she had some spots left in her Holga class. I kinda felt like it was sign, since I had won that gold Holga from I Just Might Explode. So I signed up and I'm so happy I did!Here are my two cameras. It is really been challenging for me already. With a Holga you can't be a perfectionist. The charm is the imperfection. I also can't take 350 pictures a day with it, I've got either 12 or 16 chances. I'm trying not to freak out about it! The class is 10 weeks, and we are developing our own film. AND after the class I can rent the dark room and continue to develop my own film. I'm really looking forward to that.

I took both cameras on my trip this past week (oh man I can't wait to start posting my pictures!!), with different speeds of film. I took notes on most of the photos I took so hopefully a few will turn out, and i will be able to figure out why some didn't. I tried not to put too much pressure on myself. We'll see how I do once the film is developed.

Collection 9: Squirrels

This is another collection that came about by accident. What is it about woodland creatures? Why are they so prevalent in vintage? Not that I'm complaining. I love squirrels. I used to wish that squirrels lived in my yard when I was a kid. Now some do, and I love it! 

This little weather prophet squirrel looks vintage, but I bought it in a gift shop in Cave City, Kentucky on our anniversary trip two years ago. I have a hunch that this gift shop is selling stuff that it has had for the last 40 years. Or I like to imagine there are still companies out there making things out of walnuts and pipe cleaners. 

These little squirrel salt and pepper shakers are missing the tree they should hang on, but they are still so sweet! I couldn't resist them when I saw them at the flea market. The lady who sold them to me said she was hoping someone would think they were as sweet as she did.

This plastic squirrel and pinecone set are from Santa's Land in Cherokee, North Carolina. Another example of a gift shop full of stuff they have had hanging around for year. I love that.

I love this style of squirrel. Only two of these are vintage for sure, but that doesn't really matter to me.
This is my favorite wall squirrel. He was marked as a chipmunk at an antique store.
